The program began in 2017 with the visit of the Iasi Mayor, Mr. Mihai Chirica, at Houston City Hall. The visit included a meeting with Mr. Sylvester Turner, the Mayor of the City of Houston. Their friendly and fruitful meeting culminated with the signing of a Memorandum of understanding regarding the initiation of the sister cities program. Following that event, a plethora of activities involving the two communities has been pursued with excellent results.
The relationship between the two administrations was continuous during this period. Actual deputy Mayor of the City of Iasi, Dr. Daniel Juravle, former head of economic cooperation office within Iasi City Hall has met constantly with Mr. Olson and Mrs. Ngo starting with March 2018, to update the various activities taking place within the program. They analyzed the progress of the program and brought the two institutions on the same page regarding program evolution. Together, they identified further opportunities and directions for diversifying and bringing added consistency to the relationship between the two cities. During the pandemics communication was kept alive and everything was ready for the last meeting that took place in March 2023, during the last economic mission that the City of Iasi organized to Houston.
